Individuals experiencing homelessness often have complex medical and behavioral health needs. For those who end up hospitalized, their lack of stable housing can be a barrier to safe discharge. When these patients no longer require inpatient-level care, they need a safe place to recuperate. Medical respite is a coordinated system of care that provides patients experiencing homelessness with a safe place to recover coupled with short-term supports. At this teach-in event, a panel of current and former medical respite clients will teach healthcare professionals, trainees, and other interested audience members about their experiences in medical respite programs. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how the medical respite care model can improve health outcomes and facilitate transitions into stable housing among patients experiencing homelessness.
